Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Etica-mente. L’annuario is an open-access academic journal in moral philosophy. The journal publishes original and unpublished contributions addressing contemporary ethical issues, with particular attention to the relations between ethics, politics, law, technology, urban space, and forms of social life.


1. Types of Contributions

The journal publishes the following types of contributions:

Research Articles

Original scholarly articles subject to double-blind peer review.

  • Maximum length: 30,000 characters, including spaces, abstract, and references.

Essays

Original philosophical contributions selected by the Editorial Team.

  • Essays undergo editorial review and are not subject to external anonymous peer review.

  • Essays may address topics not directly related to a specific Call for Papers.

  • Maximum length: 20,000 characters, including spaces, abstract, and references.

Reviews

Critical reviews of recently published books relevant to the journal’s scope.

  • Reviews are not peer-reviewed.

  • Maximum length: 10,000 characters, including spaces.

For all submissions (except Reviews), the following elements must be provided in English:

  • Abstract (max 100 words)

  • 5 keywords, separated by commas

Each submission must be clearly assigned to the appropriate section at the time of submission.


2. Language

Submissions are accepted in Italian, English, French, and Spanish.


3. Open Access and Licensing

Etica-mente. L’annuario is a fully Open Access journal.

  • All published articles and essays (not reviews) are assigned a DOI.

  • Articles are distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY 4.0).

  • Authors retain copyright of their work and grant the journal the right of first publication.


4. Ethical Standards and Originality

By submitting a manuscript, authors confirm that:

  • the submission is original and has not been previously published;

  • it is not under consideration by another journal;

  • all sources are properly acknowledged;

  • there are no conflicts of interest related to the submitted work.

The journal follows the ethical principles and best practices of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Submissions are subject to plagiarism checks using standard detection tools, at the editors’ discretion.


5. Peer Review Process

Research articles are evaluated through a double-blind peer review process.

Authors must ensure that:

  • the manuscript is fully anonymized;

  • no identifying information appears in the text or file properties.

Essays and Reviews are evaluated by the Editorial Team and are not subject to anonymous peer review.


6. Submission Procedure

All submissions must be made exclusively through the journal’s online submission system (OJS).

During submission, authors are required to upload:

  1. the anonymized manuscript;

  2. the abstract and keywords;

  3. metadata (author information and affiliation).

Authors are required to indicate their affiliation using the following format: Institution name in the original language, Country in English (e.g. Università di Catania, Italy; Universidad de Madrid, Spain).

Affiliations are displayed in the published PDF in the original language, while affiliation metadata recorded in the journal platform (OJS) are standardized in English for indexing and interoperability purposes.

Submissions sent by email are not accepted.

8. Quotations and Citations

The journal adopts an author–date system.

  • (Last name, year, page)

  • Two authors: (Last name 1, Last name 2, year, page)

  • Three or more authors: (Last name 1 et al., year, page)

Use quotation marks “…”, not «…».

Use single quotation marks ‘…’ inside quotations.

Footnotes must be strictly limited.


9. References

References must appear at the end of the manuscript and follow these formats:

Books

Last name, N. Year. Title. Place: Publisher.

For later editions:

Last name, N. Year of first edition. Title. Place: Publisher, year of used edition.

For translations:

Last name, N. Year of first edition. Original title. Place: Publisher (transl. Title. Place: Publisher, year).

Journal articles

Last name, N. Year. “Title”. Journal, volume/issue, pages.

Essays in edited volumes

Last name, N. Year. Title of the essay. In N. Last name (ed.), Title of the book. Place: Publisher, pages.

For multiple works by the same author in the same year:

  • Yeara, Yearb, etc.


10. Style Conventions

Spacing and punctuation

  • One space between words

  • One space after punctuation, never before

  • No spaces inside brackets

  • No spaces in dates and numerical ranges (e.g. 2005–2006)

Acronyms

No dots (e.g. BBC, USA, NATO)

Italics

Use italics for:

  1. titles of works;

  2. foreign or technical terms.

For non-Latin alphabets, use transliterated Latin characters.

Articles

This section includes original research articles submitted to the journal.
All submissions are subject to a double-blind peer review process.

Privacy Statement

Privacy Statement (GDPR)

The names, email addresses, and any other personal data entered on this journal website (Etica-mente. L’annuario) are collected and processed in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (General Data Protection Regulation – GDPR).

Personal data are used exclusively for purposes related to the editorial management of the journal, including, but not limited to:

– user registration;

– manuscript submission and evaluation;

– management of the peer review process;

– editorial communications and publication notifications.

Personal data will not be shared with third parties nor used for commercial purposes or for purposes other than those stated above.

Data processing is carried out using appropriate technical and organizational measures to ensure data security, integrity, and confidentiality.

Data subjects may exercise, at any time, the rights provided under Articles 15–22 of the GDPR, including the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, and objection, by contacting the journal’s editorial office.

The provision of personal data is required in order to participate in the journal’s editorial activities. Failure to provide such data may result in the inability to register or to complete a submission.
