This paper aims to explore the relationship between José Ortega y Gasset’s philosophy and the poetry of Montale. Using Ortega’s ideas of “porosity” and “hermeticism,” the study examines Montale’s Ossi di seppia, showing the struggle between spiritual closure and the hope for an opening in reality. The analysis then explores the concept of “sentimental geometry” to explain how the absence of a loved one changes our perception of the world. Through the examples of Montale, Dante and Salinas, the essay shows that literature can transform philosophical theories into powerful images of human emotions.
